“Summer reading can be a time to foster a love of learning. But with a little forethought, it can also be a chance for parents or other adults to help students improve their reading skills. Michelle Hosp, director of the Iowa Reading Resource Center, suggests that parents pick one skill to focus on this summer with their child. She recently explained five core skills discussed by the National Reading Panel. All can be easily built into a family’s routine, and many can become natural parts of conversations with children. “It’s important to have fun with it, and to realize that the expectation is not to sit down with your kids an hour a day and grill them,” she said. “It’s 5 minutes here and 2 minutes there, and incorporating things into the daily routine.” But she also encourages parents to be thoughtful and plan out activities or conversations.”(more)
