“Children are back at school with fresh school supplies, a new set of books, and likely a larger load in their backpack. But orthopedic surgeons are saying ill-fitting backpacks can put children at risk for muscle injuries, back, neck or shoulder pain and posture problems. Last year doctors and hospitals nationwide treated 10,000 children, ages 5 through 18, for backpack-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. And those injuries are avoidable.
