STEAM education starts early with the right books

The News and Observer – Susie Wilde

“STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) is one of the best educational initiatives in a long while. Its purpose is to educate children for the future in which they’ll live. When Maria Hitt from The Orange County Partnership for Young Children contacted me to co-present on the subject, I had my doubts. “Really,” I asked, “Technology and engineering for children that young?” She quickly convinced me speaking of preschool technology tools (crayons, scissors, shovels, brooms, hoes, egg beaters …) and engineering that happens in block corners and sand boxes. I know the importance of nurturing the innate curiosity of young children, so Hitt and I composed a workshop to nourish STEAM in preschools. She presented a slew of educational STEAM resources. I focused on the books – some of which I share below.”(more)

Mock election, voter drive aims to teach high schoolers that they ‘have a voice that is worthy of being heard’

The Orange County Register – Roxana Kopetman

“Mixtli Leal stood near voting booths at Cesar E. Chavez High School on Thursday and offered her classmates this bit of advice: “They’re not touch screens.” For some teens accustomed to touching screens to make things happen, that was different. So was the idea of voting. Enter Vote Mobile, a motorized road show put on by the Orange County registrar of voters. It comes complete with voting booths and fliers in five languages and workers from the registrar’s office. On Thursday, with the nation gearing up to a elect a president (and senators, representatives, and other people) this year, Vote Mobile made its first on-campus appearance of 2016, rolling up to stage a mock election at the high school.”(more)

Help wanted: Orange County faces a teacher drought

The Orange County Register – KELLY ST. JOHN REGIER

“California has a message for teachers or anyone who has dreamed of a career in the classroom: We need you. In a big shift from just a few years ago – when school districts were handing out pink slips to teachers in the wake of budget cuts – the scramble is on. School districts are snapping up every new teacher they can find, and they’re going to new lengths to fill high-demand teaching positions in math, science, special education and bilingual education. Those who run teacher-preparation programs in Orange County say many students are getting job offers on the spot during interviews, and more are getting hired to train “on the job” through internship programs that put them into their own classrooms, even though they are still studying for their teaching credentials.”(more)

Outside the Box – Juliann Talkington

La Escuela del Condado de Orange Recibe el Premio Nacional a la Excelencia Académica

Outside the Box – Juliann Talkington

Orange County School to Receive National Academic Excellence Awards

Outside the Box – Juliann Talkington

Orange County students achieve high academic performance in a K-12 academic program modeled after top performing international school systems.

The U.S. continues to perform poorly in international academic comparisons like the Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

The Renascence School International™ Orange County Campus is working diligently to help its students reach an academic level that is common in countries that perform well on these international tests.

The school uses a unique curriculum and special techniques to teach advanced, international level material. There is no intelligence testing, yet almost all the students in this school are learning and retaining advanced material.

Another unique feature of the Renascence School International™ Orange County Campus program is that it maximizes learning in the classroom and minimizes the amount of time students spend on homework. This feature leaves students with ample time to develop extra curricular interests and hone leadership skills.

As a result of its efforts, the Renascence School International™ Orange County Campus will receive two academic excellence awards during a ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 2987 Mesa Verde Drive East, Costa Mesa, California. Photo and interview opportunities are available in Chinese, Spanish and English.

One might think this is a school for nerds, but the campus has nationally ranked athletes and budding musicians and actors. In addition the school organizes an international field trip each summer. This year an eighth grade student used her Spanish skills to help with the planning.

It is exciting to see three and four year olds speaking three languages, five year olds eagerly learning the basics of algebra, and middle school students exploring how they can blend art, science, and math to come up with creative solutions to real world problems.
