“Longer school days are not necessarily the key to improving student performance, Chancellor Carmen Fariña said Monday after visiting two charter schools that provide extra classroom hours. “I think it’s all about the quality. It’s not about how many days or how many hours,” Fariña said after touring Girls Preparatory School in The Bronx, which opened 10 days ahead of regular public schools. “It is really about what we do with the time we have in school.” But Fariña shifted gears when discussing the city’s 94 low-performing public schools, which have been branded Renewal Schools, that have added an hour to their daily schedules. “We feel there is another way to learn what you are learning during the day after 3 p.m., 3 to 4. There is no one answer to this,” the chancellor said.”(more)
