Penn Live – Lloyd E. Sheaffer

“Our preparations have always included learning a few courtesy phrases in the languages of the places we have visited as a sign of respect for our hosts–not to mention that at our advancing ages it is imperative to know how to ask “Where is the bathroom?” wherever we are. Our pronunciation and accents may have garbled the words or elicited a few smiles, but always we have received warm replies–and occasional corrections–to our utterances. Knowing a foreign language has many more important benefits than being able to order a meal or to seek directions in an unfamiliar place. Studying a second language, especially if the learning begins in early childhood, provides myriad advantages beyond just the ability to speak with others.”(more)
