“A new initiative has been announced by President Obama that would encourage 1 million schoolchildren to learn to speak Mandarin Chinese within the next five years. Right now there are around 200,000 students across the country learning the language. The new program would…create a standardized national Chinese curriculum that would allow for flexibility at the local school level while at the same time preparing all students for the AP Chinese language exam and further advanced study of the language…The program was created in an effort to allow Americans to gain a better perspective of Chinese culture, prepare American students to deal with China in their future jobs, and ensure that all American students learn about the country.”(more)
