“The White House Council on Women and Girls has collaborated with the Anna Julia Cooper Center to host a forum on Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color. The forum is focused in part on “Fostering School Success and reducing Unnecessary Exclusionary School Discipline.” “Girls of color experience disproportionately high rates of school suspensions,” according to the statement from the council. “Black girls are suspended at higher rates (12%) than girls of any other race or ethnicity and at higher rates than white boys (6%) and white girls (2%). American Indian/Alaska Native girls are also suspended at rates that exceed those of white students.” One of the goals of the group is to help lower these numbers by promoting safe, inclusive and positive learning environments according to the release. Their solution puts the pressure on administrators to be more supportive of their students particularly minorities and more so, female minorities.”(more)
