That’s why one of my favorite phrases is “I hate math.” Nearly every student shares this sentiment with me at some point during the school year, and when they do, I simply smile. Because I know that by the end of my class, those same students will find their inner mathematician. For me, this is what teaching is all about—helping students discover parts of themselves they never realized they had.
