“With the pressure on to reduce the number of school days missed, many schools have introduced attendance awards to incentivize students. A few years ago, we set out to test this strategy. Along with Jana Gallus at University of California, Los Angeles and Monica Lee at Stanford University, we conducted a randomized controlled experiment involving 15,329 middle and high school students across 14 districts in California. These students, who all had a perfect month of attendance during the preceding fall semester, were randomly assigned to one of two groups involving awards, or a control group that received no additional communications and served as the comparison.” (more)
