“Race is a taboo subject in our culture. Just like we don’t often bring up money or politics at dinner parties, most of us have learned over time that it can be considered impolite to bring up discussions of race. Children pick up on these social cues from a pretty early age. If nobody around them is talking about differences in skin color, they learn they probably shouldn’t be bringing it up either. In fact, they may not even have the vocabulary to do so. This can lead adults to assume that children aren’t noticing racial differences.” (more)
