“Taylor’s parents had watched his science obsession progress through grade school from rockets and explosive chemistry to a passion for nuclear physics. A year earlier, distraught over his grandmother’s cancer diagnosis, Taylor came up with an idea to use nuclear fusion to produce cancer-spotting medical isotopes (they light up cells in tumors). He set out to build a nuclear fusion reactor — something that, at the time, only 10 individuals in the world had done.
