The Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel – Rick Barrett

“Saying that math and science teachers aren’t paid enough, a new survey from Milwaukee-based ASQ has found that 90% of parents would encourage their children to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, but not teaching jobs in those fields. The Harris poll on behalf of ASQ, formerly known as the American Society for Quality, found that only 9% of parents would encourage their children to pursue STEM teaching as a career. In a separate ASQ survey of educators, 29% said they would encourage their own children to pursue a STEM teaching career. However, the majority would prefer their children pursue work as an engineer, scientist or computer/information technology analyst. Statewide, there is a shortage of teachers in science, technology, engineering and math, according to ASQ, which has more than 14,000 engineers in its membership.”(more)
