“A report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sheds light on the vast differences between countries when it comes to spending on education. The proportion of public expenditure set aside for education has been increasing in recent years and the OECD average is now 12.9 percent of total public expenditure. At the very top of the scale, 21.6 percent of total public expenditure in New Zealand is devoted to education. The story is similar in Mexico where that figure is 20.5 percent, while Brazil also invests a significant portion of its public finances in the school system, 19.2 percent. Elsewhere, the United States allocates 13.6 percent of public spending for education while Italy comes a long distance behind with 8.6 percent.”(more)
