“A little over 50 years ago, a student teacher in Minneapolis hit upon a novel idea to engage his eighth grade American history class in a unit on westward expansion. Don Rawitsch, with the help of two fellow student teachers, Paul Dillenberger and Bill Heinemann, created a game in which students took on the role of a wagon leader making the harrowing journey from Missouri to Oregon in the mid-1800s. The game was programmed into a teletype machine connected to a mainframe computer, with results printed out on a roll of paper.” (more)
