“There are around seven million adults of working age with “poor” numeracy skills (21 per cent of the available workforce). They are twice as likely to be unemployed and five times more likely to have achieved no qualifications by the age of 34. It is a tragedy for them, but also for the UK’s economic future. So much of a nation’s industry depends, in this hi-tech age, on expertise in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The UK risks falling behind its competitors.”(more)
