“Watching the fraught school reopening debates in cities like New York and Washington D.C. has been like looking at a car crash—you can’t take your eyes away, and you know someone is going to get hurt. Like many car crash victims, parents and teachers are experiencing whiplash. Schools are changing plans for tens of thousands of students at the last minute, and families head into weekends not knowing where their children will be educated the next week.
