“While technology has successfully entered the fitness arena, we can also ascribe the technology age some of the blame for children not being as active as they were even a decade ago. Let’s face it, children have all the entertainment they need at their fingertips or, as may be the case, in the palm of their hands. The rise in popularity of at-home entertainment through on-demand television and video game systems has had a negative effect on daily activity and exercise for children which is not good news considering the CDC recommends children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Sound like a lot? If you break it down into different aspects of their lives, it’s really not overwhelming at all…If it’s getting their heart rate up, it counts…Whether your role is one of a parent, coach, teacher, family member or friend, it is important to encourage our younger generation to not only participate in physical activities that are varied and age-appropriate, but to help them foster a true appreciation for the importance of exercise and daily activity. Stressing the benefits of an active lifestyle today is something that can remain with them through adulthood.”(more)
